The weekend of 25/26 August saw another very successful St Mary’s regatta for Enterprises and Mirrors.
The Mirror fleet of 6 consisted of home boats and the event was won by Ian Brown – well done Ian! Special mention must be made to Cy McKenzie who only completed Adult Camp and purchased her Mirror this season!
The Enterprise event was hotly contested: 18 boats, six from St Mary’s including a new young generation of sailors, Nathan McMorran with Piers Dobbie and Marc Heger with Philip McMorran; now Gerry Goodfellow is no longer the youngest in the fleet! St Mary’s also provided crews for other boats: Fi Foulkes (Grieve) was reunited with helm Ali Morrish (who has been a member in the past), they finished 7th – meanwhile Elianna Proud sailed with Jonathan Woodward who finished 4th and Sally Caunt sailed with Mike Heap who finished 11th. Well done to all St Mary’s sailors, past and present!
Race Officer Ian Malcolm took the fleets to the far end of the loch to find a decent wind for Saturday’s three races. It was still flukey but nevertheless fair and challenging with Ian efficiently getting the fleets away with no delay between races.
After the first day Tim Sadler & Leanne from Yorkshire Dales SC held the lead on 7 points while the boats of Ges Brown & Julie Moore (South Caernarvonshire YC) and Colin & Bel Gardiner (Tynemouth SC) were both on 11 points.
On Sunday the wind from the south meant that the course was set in the part of the loch closest to the clubhouse – good views for the spectators! The wind had also increased in strength from Saturday, up to force 4 gusting force 5, which led to some unscheduled swimming!
Ges Brown and Julie Moore scored a 1st and 2nd to overtake Tim and Leanne (4th and 1st) with Colin and Bel 3rd overall. Charles and Alison were first St Mary’s boat in 8th overall.
In his winner’s speech Ges made a point of complimenting the club on it’s hospitality, bacon rolls at midnight, the bar, the ceilidh and of course the sailing! He hoped everyone would be returning next year for what will be his 25th St Mary’s regatta!
Overall 23 club members took part in the sailing while others on the water ran the racing and provided rescue cover. Meanwhile the on shore catering team provided food for more than 60 people for the weekend and ‘Maggie’s Bar’ now under the management of Mhorag provided appropriate liquid refreshment – well done to everyone involved!
