Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question which is not answered below please contact us and we would delighted to answer your enquiry.

Q: Can I attend the training courses offered by the club?

A: Yes, if you are a member. The club does not offer training or RYA courses for non-members.

Q: Can I hire boats and equipment if I want to come sailing for a day?

A: If you are a member then you can hire a Topper or Topaz at £10 per day, or the RS Feva at £20 per day. Boat hire is provided to help new members and families with children get started. Members are expected to purchase their own boats eventually.

Boat hire can also be used by large families to get everyone on the water and take part at handicap events. Hire is not available for non members.

Q: Can my club or organisation use (or hire) the sailing club grounds and facilities

A: The club grounds and facilities are not available for use by non-members unless by special arrangement with the committee.

Q: Can I launch my own craft on the loch without being a member?

A: The Scottish “Freedom to Roam” act (the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003) allows anybody to make use of the loch in an unpowered boat. However, access to the water via our grounds is only available to club members.

For more information on how to join the club, please see our membership page.

As a sailing club, we would encourage anybody who takes to the water, whether in a sailing boat, canoe or rowing boat, to wear a buoyancy aid at all times. St Mary’s Loch is very deep and often very cold.
