Big Kids Camp 2019

Commodores Remarks

23 intrepid ‘Big Kids’ prepared for a wet and windy long weekend of tough training and were pleasantly surprised with more than occasional sunshine and winds that behaved themselves more often the not. This meant that all groups had plenty of time on the water to learn the basic manoeuvres or hone their skills.

Thursday and Friday were full on training sessions and Saturday included the traditional sail to the north end of the loch and back (with a proper squall to liven up the trip - plenty of impromptu swimming!!).

But it wasn’t all work and no play. The social aspect was again fantastic and welcomed new Big Kids on their first camp. Eating and drinking was of course central to the general merriment and the dinners were all brilliant. There was some singing and even a ceilidh although perhaps this was more creaking than dancing.

The event was topped off with the Rear Commodores's Cup for Novices. A decent F3/4 southerly ensured a competitive race. Well done Chris Blake, our 2019 whippet and overall winner with wins in the first and third race. All in it was very close, with 5 possible winners as the gun went off for the 3rd race. Thank you to Keith and Duncan as RO & ARO for the Novice Cup, together with Roger, Lorry and Mhorag for providing safety boat cover.

From the big kids, a massive thank you to Ian Malcolm for organising the instructors, and to Charles, Alison, Roger, Nathan and Lorry for their time and energy in providing instruction.

And finally, congratulations to Rachel, Hamish and Mark who completed their Assistant Instructors certificate!

Sailing Instructor Remarks

Enthusiastic sailors and instructors. Everyone’s sailing improving.

Inaccurate weather forecasts: the rain never came. Steady winds, gusts from nowhere and flat calms. Lasers doing 360s round horizontal axes. Lasers, Laser 16, Laser 2000, Topaz, Toppers, Picos, Enterprises, Wayfarer, Solo.

Alarm clocks enjoying the holiday. Excellent catering and social activity; where did we get the energy to dance on Saturday evening? And, most important, great friendship!

Many thanks to all for making it a great weekend. Looking forward already to next year!

Ian Malcolm
